Koalas were once so abundant they formed the basis of a significant fur trade to Europe. Today, habitat loss and disease have pushed this iconic species close to extinction.
4.1 Transfer core koala habitat on public lands to national parks
Conserving all core koala habitat on publicly owned land is one of the most important steps required to protect this species.
4.2 Stop logging koala habitat
Place a moratorium on logging koala habitat and end public native forest logging by 2024.
4.3 Ban land clearing of koala habitat by 2025
Mining, agriculture and urban development are responsible for 38% of koala habitat destruction every year.
4.4 Double koala populations in key areas by 2050
The NSW Government should develop recovery plans for every Koala Management Area (KMA) to achieve the government’s goal of doubling koala numbers by 2050.
4.5 Establish a $1 billion habitat restoration fund by 2023
Protection of remaining habitat is important but is insufficient on its own to ensure the species’ survival.
