Roots & Resistance

Co-hosted by Sapna South Asian Climate Solidarity, Sydney Bollywood, Hindus 4 Human Rights, Sweltering Cities and the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

An evening of storytelling and art focusing on the international implications of Australia’s coal. We'll be using poetry, storytelling and dance to bring to light our connections to climate and vision a future beyond coal.

The evening will premiere a documentary filmed on Wiradjuri country about NSW’s biggest producing coal mine and the intergenerational, cross cultural solidarity to stop it. The film is told through the eyes of Manjot, a Punjabi climate activist who draws the links between the climate impacts in Punjab, a region of India, and the devastation to local environment and community in her hometown of Mudgee, NSW.

The space is migrant led, for migrant and descendants of migrants, to weave together the stories of climate impacts, and solutions in our diaspora communities.

The program includes:

  • The screening of Voices For The Valley, a documentary about NSW's biggest coal mine through a migrant lens.

  • Dance performances by Sydney Bollywood and other creatives

  • A storysharing workshop and reflection space

  • Responsive spoken word poetry

  • A chance to be part of a collaborative art piece mapping our lineages, homes, and the international climate justice implications between Australia's coal and the disasters it fuels in our homelands.
