Nature connectivity in the Hunter: opportunities from the Hunter Transmission Project

The Hunter region is facing a huge transition away from fossil fuels and onto renewable energy. The Hunter Transmission Project (HTP) is a critical project part of this transition, not just for the Hunter but for the whole of NSW’s transition to renewable energy. The timely delivery of this project is essential to ensure NSW’s remaining coal-fired power plants close as soon as possible and the state’s emission reduction targets are met.

The HTP will deliver solar and wind power to the businesses and homes that need it. But it will also have considerable nature impacts, which is why NCC is calling for a new network of critical habitat reserves to increase connectivity and regeneration of bushland in the Hunter region.

Join NCC on Tuesday 5th May to unpack our report, Extending and rationalising key conservation reserves in the Hunter, outlining how extending key conservation reserves within the Hunter region as part of the HTP offsets will deliver a once in a generation opportunity for habitat protection and connectivity.

Hear from a variety of local environmental groups and researchers on the importance of increasing habitat connectivity in the Hunter and the species we need to protect.

Speakers:

  • Kerry Walker, Hunter Wildlife Rescue
  • Alex Callen, Centre for Conservation Science
  • Eve Altman, Nature Conservation Council of NSW
  • Ian McKenzie, Save Link Road Forest
  • Steve Meadows, Hunter Regional Landcare

This event is for anyone in the Hunter region who wants to learn more about this opportunity, how to support our call for more protected areas, hear from and connect with local groups.

Light snacks will be available.

This event is free, but registration is essential.
