How do I leave a gift to nature in my will?

Writing your Will is an important and personal process. It ensures your loved ones and causes close to your heart are provided for. There are many ways to leave a gift in your Will, also called a bequest, and it’s important you find the right way for you.

If you do not have a Will, the first thing you will need is some legal advice on how to create one. Your solicitor or the public trustee in NSW can help with this. We recommend  that your Will is prepared by a solicitor or trustee company. This will ensure it is legally valid and reflects your intentions and circumstances.

If you are ready to start writing your will, we’ve partnered with online platform Willed. Willed, who offer a legally binding Will which can be completed in less than 10 minutes, with unlimited updates for life.  They provide a quick, easy and secure service, legal support and advice.

What if I have a will already? If you have a Will already, then all you need to do to support nature with a gift is add a codicil – a short legal amendment at the bottom of your existing Will. This allows you to leave a gift to NCC without having to rewrite the Will itself.

What types of charitable bequest can I make?

There are three types of charitable gifts you can leave to NCC:

  1. A percentage or fraction your estate: This is often regarded as the most flexible option as you don’t have to adjust the value of your gift to account for inflation, or changes to your total assets.
  1. A residual gift: This is the remainder of your estate after the gifts you have bequeathed to your loved ones have been distributed. This is typically expressed as a percentage of the remainder of your estate.
  1. A pecuniary gift: This is a specific sum of money. This may need to be changed over the years to account for inflation and changes to your circumstances.

All gifts, large or small, are deeply appreciated. It's important to talk to your loved ones about your intentions and let them know that leaving a gift for nature is important to you. This can help to ensure that your intentions and wishes are carried out.
