Title: Accessibility project volunteer
Location: Sydney, potential for remote
Time Commitment: 3+ hours per week until project completion, around 6 months.
Overview
The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) is the state’s peak environment organisation, representing over 200 environment groups across NSW. Together we are dedicated to protecting and conserving the wildlife, landscapes and natural resources of NSW. NCC and the membership network are a grassroots environmental advocacy network working toward a just and sustainable future for all. As part of our commitment to intersectional justice and inclusion, we’re seeking a volunteer to help us reflect on how accessible our organisation truly is—and how we can do better.
If you care about environmental justice and want to contribute to building a truly accessible movement for nature, we’d love to work with you.
Key Responsibilities
- Pull together existing social movement and other resources regarding accessible spaces, practices and activism, from digital accessibility, accessible events to inclusive language and behaviour. This will include working with disability-led inclusion organisations.
- Review NCC's current practices, spaces, communications, and materials through an accessibility lens.
- Identify both strengths and areas for growth in how we show up for disabled and neurodivergent communities.
- Create practical and empowering resources that help staff of NCC, and the broader membership network, integrate accessibility into their everyday work.
Skills and Experience Required
- Awareness or a willingness to learn accessibility and disability justice principles, especially in the context of social change and environmental movements.
- Confidence in reviewing policies and practices with a critical but compassionate eye.
- Ability to communicate clearly and accessibly, with a focus on collaboration.
- Experience developing resources, conducting audits, or community engagement is a bonus—but not essential.
- Volunteers who meet only some of these requirements are encouraged to apply.
What You Will Gain
- A chance to shape how a values-driven organisation grows in justice and inclusion.
- Practical experience in accessibility review and resource development.
- Recognition of your work and the opportunity to lead positive, lasting change across the movement for nature in NSW.
- Connection with a passionate team committed to collective learning and equity.
