Top 20 deforestation hotspots in NSW

Reckless levels of deforestation that have been legalised by Premier Gladys Berejiklian are driving koalas from their homes and closer to extinction.

A new report we have compiled with other conservation groups has found 17 of the state’s 20 deforestation hotspots contain koala habitat that is now open to land clearing under new state environmental laws.

Rates of deforestation are worst in the state’s central west and northwest, with pockets of excessive land clearing on the north coast, in the Hunter Valley and in the state’s southwest.

Matching deforestation data with National Species of National Environmental Significance records shows 17 of the 20 deforestation hotspots contained almost 7 million hectares of koala habitat.
