Narriearra Station adds a vital piece to the NSW National Parks network
The conservation movement welcomes Environment Minister Matt Kean’s announcement that the NSW Government will add the 153,000-hectare Narriearra Station in far northwest NSW to the national parks estate. [1]
“We always welcome new parks but this is particularly significant because of its scale and the range of ecosystems and species it will protect,” Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive Chris Gambian said.
“By securing this property, Minister Kean has beaten his pledge to add 200,000 hectares to the reserve system and this government still has more than two years of its term left to run.
“We now urge the government to turn its attention to the urgent matter of forest conservation.
“Thousands of hectares of state forests are endangered right now by mining and logging projects.
“The Pilliga forest in the state’s northwest and the Gardens of Stone near Lithgow are areas of outstanding conservation value threatened by gas and coal projects.
“These areas should be out of bounds from development, especially fossil fuel projects that are feeding climate change and threatening our livelihoods and lifestyles.
“Forests on the north and south coasts are being logged at a pace that has not slowed even though fires have ripped through millions of hectares.
“The constant destruction must stop or we will push koalas and other unique species to extinction within our lifetime.”
