NSW must follow Victoria’s lead and announce end date for native forest logging
The NSW must follow the lead of the Victorian Government which reportedly will today announce a timetable for ending native forest logging. [1]
“While Victoria is moving to protect native forests, NSW is planning to open old-growth forests for logging,” Nature Conservation Council CEO Chris Gambian said.
“The NSW Government must rule out opening old-growth forests for logging and develop a plan to urgently end native forest logging once and for all.
“Native forest logging and land clearing are the biggest threat to our koalas.
“Experts say these beautiful animals will disappear from NSW by 2050 if we don’t stop cutting down their trees.
“Meanwhile the Berejiklian government has accelerated land clearing and is now considering opening up some of our oldest forests for logging.
“If we want our grandchildren to be able to see koalas in the wild, we must stop cutting down their trees and create a national park to protect the best habitat left in NSW.”
“Native forest logging is destroying our public native forests – it is unsustainable and unnecessary.
“Hardwood timbers should only ever be sourced from carefully designed and managed plantations.
“The hardwood timber industry can and should be a thriving part of our regional economy in NSW, providing well paid, safe, secure jobs. But that requires a serious long-term commitment to hardwood plantations.”
