Coalition spends $102 million on climate change disaster relief but nothing on limiting climate pollution
“The NSW Budget contains no money for reducing climate pollution but $102 million for dealing with the disasters that climate change is causing, like floods and storms,” Nature Conservation Council CEO Kate Smolski said.
“This is not the response of financially prudent risk managers – it is the response of a government of climate change denialists and defeatists.
“We should massively increase our efforts to reduce climate pollution, yet for some reason this Berejiklian government continued to stick its head in the sand and hope the problem will go away. It won’t.
“This government is sitting on a clean-energy war chest of almost $1.4 billion in the Climate Change Fund.
“Rather than pouring money into renewables, pumped hydro and other forms of storage it has been dribbling out funds and diverting them for other purposes, including syphoning off $240 million to pay for its land clearing package.
“On top of what’s left of the Climate Change Fund, we are calling on the government to create a $2 billion clean energy fund to turbo charge the state’s transition to renewables and ensure a just transition for communities that will be affected by the coming changes.”
