AGL's rejection of Alinta bid for Liddell the only responsible option
The NSW Nature Conservation Council is calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg to end their pro-coal crusade after AGL today rejected a bid by Alinta to buy the aging Liddell coal-fired power station.
“Rejecting Alinta's bid to extend the life of the Liddell coal-fired power station beyond 2022 was the only responsible option,” NCC Energy Campaigner Dr Brad Smith said.
"Attempting to keep Liddell burning coal contravenes Australia’s Paris commitments and undermines chances of limiting global warming to safe levels.
"Mr Turnbull and Mr Frydenberg should end their pro-coal crusade and look to cleaner, more affordable, more reliable options to power our society.
"By investing in clean energy we can take back control of our electricity bills, make the grid more reliable and create a better world."
NCC's Repowering Our Regions report showed that transitioning to clean energy could create 24,000 jobs across NSW and stimulate billions of dollars of investment in regional NSW.
The Nature Conservation Council has previously argued that Alinta's track record of failed coal power station rehabilitation makes them an unfit operator of a plant in NSW. [1]
