AEMO report illustrates lack of NSW storage plan
The Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) concerns about the closure of Liddell Power Station illustrates the NSW Government’s failure to plan for an orderly transition to a reliable, clean energy future. [1]
“All the other states have big battery or pumped-hydro projects – NSW is the only state that doesn’t have a plan,” NCC Climate and Energy Campaigner Brad Smith said.
“Rather than pushing his deeply flawed National Energy Guarantee, Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg should lean on his NSW Coalition colleagues to start investing in the dispatchable clean energy.
“The energy sector is a shambles because state and federal governments have failed to plan and lead on this issue.
“NSW Government still has no plan to develop large-scale dispatchable power like batteries and pumped hydro that could back up the energy system as we transition away from coal to clean energy."
Dr Smith said replacing Liddell with more coal or gas plants would make a mockery of NSW Government's commitment to zero climate pollution by 2050.
"We've seen that batteries can be built in 100 days, so clean energy and storage can absolutely solve this problem.
"Turnbull's NEG is the worst approach because it will lock in the power of the big three energy companies to jack up electricity prices."
