Don’t play politics with our climate and our future
The Nature Conservation Council is urging Premier Mike Baird to be leader on climate change policy following revelations his office blocked a submission to a Federal Government inquiry into Australia’s emissions target. [1]
“Mr Baird needs to explain why he allocated resources to prepare a detailed submission on emissions targets but chose not to submit it to the Federal Government,” said NCC CEO Kate Smolski.
“Was it because the report would embarrass the Federal Coalition Government, which is proposing to set unambitious emissions targets and a very weak response to climate change?
“Mr Baird’s office has reportedly refused to answer this question.
“The people expect Mr Baird to ensure the best possible advice feeds into Australia’s response to dangerous climate change, and that he will not play politics with our climate or our future.
“The Premier has been praised in some quarters for having the courage to tackling tough policy issues, including tax reform, and for being above party politics.
“It is disappointing Mr Baird has failed to show leadership on this critical issue in the lead up to the Paris Climate Summit.”
