ALP should extend Northern Rivers CSG ban to whole of the state
The NSW Nature Conservation Council has welcomed ALP Leader Luke Foleys announcement that a Labor government would ban fracking in the northern rivers region.
“We applauded Mr Foley and the ALP for taking steps to protect vital water resources, farmland and communities in the Northern Rivers,” NCC CEO Kate Smolski said.
“The Labor Party clearly recognizes that some places are too precious to risk having them poisoned or degraded by this dangerous industry.
“The announcement also respects the wishes of the Northern Rivers community, which has demonstrated so forcefully its staunch opposition to coal seam gas field in their beautiful district.
“This policy complements Labor’s commitment to a moratorium on CSG activities across the state and is streets ahead of the Liberals’ and Nationals’ position on this critical election issue.
“However, we believe Mr Foley should go further and commit to declaring other no-go zones to ensure all the state’s significant natural areas, farmland and water resources are protected.
“The community will not be satisfied until the NSW Government meets this fundamental demand, regardless of who ends up becoming premier on March 28.”
