Premier Baird’s support for the Renewable Energy Target is good for consumers, jobs and the environment
The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has welcomed the NSW Government’s support for the federal renewable energy target (RET), and called for further action to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. [1]
In its submission to the Federal Government’s review of the scheme, the NSW Government has emphasised that renewable energy benefits consumers, helps energy security by diversifying sources, and cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
“It is heartening that the NSW Government submission underscores the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy for the state,” CEO Pepe Clarke said.
“Besides reducing carbon emissions, the RET is helping drive down wholesale electricity prices, and stimulating investment and employment, with $13 billion clean energy proposals in the planning pipeline.
“However, given the clearly demonstrated benefits of renewable energy, it is disappointing that the NSW Government has recommended delaying the 41,000 GWh target beyond 2020.
“We need more clean energy sooner. The renewable energy target should be increased, with ambitious medium- and long-term targets for replacing polluting coal power.
“Strengthening the target will unlock billions of dollars in private sector investment and deliver local employment in regional New South Wales.
“The National Pollutant Inventory data released last week show that coal-fired power plants are a leading source of air pollution in New South Wales.
“The data also showed that pollution from coal fired power plants has decreased as renewable energy generation has increased.
“Now is the time for bold action to accelerate the transition from old, polluting energy sources to a clean energy economy.”
