Federal Government must retain environmental powers
The NSW Nature Conservation Council is deeply concerned about the risks posed to the NSW environment by Federal Government moves to hand its approval powers to the states, as was highlighted by today’s front-page story in The Australian newspaper. [1]
“This handover is happening in the context of a developer-driven overhaul of planning laws in NSW,” NCC Chief Executive Officer Pepe Clarke said.
“The proposed changes to the state planning laws will significantly reduce public participation and opportunities for the community to challenge bad planning decisions.
“Giving the pro-development O’Farrell Government final say on significant developments would be disastrous for the NSW environment.”
