Parramatta local wins state environment award
Parramatta area local Terry McBride has won the NSW Nature Conservation Council’s (NCC) annual Volunteer for the Environment Award.
Mr McBride, a volunteer with the Parramatta Climate Action Network, was presented with his award at the 2012 NSW Environment Awards at the NCC’s annual conference at Sydney University on Saturday, October 27.
“Soon after Terry joined ParraCAN he took charge of the group’s regular street stalls in Parramatta Mall to raise public awareness of the serious consequences of climate change,’’ said NCC CEO Pepe Clarke.
“He has been heavily involved in the No New Coal campaign and also joined Beyond Zero Emissions and in no time became a presenter.
“He joined a group of 50 community leaders from around Australia who gathered at Parliament House in Canberra in June this year to lobby politicians on the need to build big solar for Australia's future. Terry pays for the printing of flyers himself and then walks whole neighbourhoods doing flyer drops, he starts early and walks all day long.
“He made several trips to South Australia in 2012 to help the campaign to make Port Augusta the first place to have a solar thermal power station. Terry is currently an active member of ParraCAN, Repower Port Augusta and is on the Beyond Zero Emissions steering committee.”
Mr Clarke said the Volunteer for the Environment Award was presented to someone who has worked untiringly behind the scenes for a better, more sustainable future.
NCC is the peak environmental group in NSW with more than 100 community environmental groups constituting its membership.
