Environment groups back park rangers
A coalition of environment groups has backed National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers in their refusal to allow shooters and hunters access to national parks.
New South Wales rangers will take industrial action from this morning to try to force the State Government to abandon its move to allow hunting in national parks.
National Parks Association of NSW CEO, Kevin Evans, said rangers were employed to prevent threats to national parks, not to encourage them.
“We fully support the rangers in their refusal to allow access to national parks by recreational shooters,” Mr Evans said.
“We call on the community to lobby their local MPs to express their concern at the O’Farrell government’s decision,” he said.
Nature Conservation Council of NSW CEO, Pepe Clarke, said the public should be able to enjoy national parks free of threats to their personal safety.
“The rangers’ concern for their own safety is a genuine one,” he said.
“Park rangers have our full support in trying to overturn this offensive decision.”
