Dear Minister Kean,

Congratulations on becoming the NSW Energy and Environment Minister. You have a very big job ahead of you as over 1000 plant and animal species are at risk of extinction in NSW, habitat loss from deforestation is rising, and pollution from our coal-burning power stations is increasing.

The people of NSW expect that protecting our environment and acting on climate change will be priorities for your government. I write today to outline my priorities for you, which are to:

  • End the deforestation and land-clearing crisis by making potential koala habitat, threatened species habitat, and other high-conservation-value areas off limits to clearing;
  • End logging of public native forests to protect what is left of these beautiful ecosystems, which are among the most diverse in the world;
  • Create the Great Koala National Park to save our iconic species for future generations;
  • Ensuring enough water is returned to the environment to restore to the Murray-Darling Basin rivers and wetlands;
  • Reduce our reliance on dirty coal by ensuring 4,000 megawatts of clean energy enters the NSW grid in this term of government; and
  • Develop a comprehensive plan to implement the government’s ‘firm commitment’ to get to zero-emissions by 2050.

I hope you will take your responsibility to act seriously and ensure we leave a state where nature thrives for future generations.
