Like many organisations, the Nature Conservation Council is actively considering what impact the COVID-19 situation in Australia will have on our operations and in particular, our ability to continue to be an effective voice for nature in the coming weeks and months.
The following decisions have been taken:
- Our office closed indefinitely on Monday. Because we are already accustomed to remote working, we are able to maintain our operations away from our office in Chippendale. While we are still contactable by telephone, we appreciate your patience if from time to time we have some logistical or technical issues with handling incoming phone calls.
- Our staff will not attend meetings in person until further notice. Again, we hope to be able to meet via phone or video link and maintain somewhat normal operations.
- The Bushfire Conference scheduled for May will be postponed until May 2021. We will advise of new dates as soon as we know when we might be able to hold the conference.
- Our parliamentary advocacy will continue, subject to the decisions of the parliament. We will continue to speak up for nature with MPs and Ministers via email and phone, but we imagine many parliamentary hearings may be postponed.
- Our organising program is under review. We will explore innovative ways to build our campaigning capacity and recruitment of new voices to the conservation movement in the coming days and weeks.
- Our campaign work will continue as normal. And there is plenty to campaign on: unburnt forests continue to be logged; the Darling Basin continues to be mismanaged; the Nationals are falling behind One Nation to make it legal to mine uranium and build nuclear power plants; and that other existential threat to the world – climate change – is not taking a holiday!
If you have any questions, or if we can be of assistance to you in any way, please feel free to contact us on (02) 9516 1488.
