Call for a Moratorium on Coastal Zombie Developments

Black and white photo of zombie development in Blueys Beach overlayed with text that says \

Up and down the NSW coast, our towns and environment are under threat. From Brunswick Heads to Bega, hordes of historic ‘Zombie’ development approvals left dormant for many decades are rising from the dead, despite in many cases directly contradicting modern planning and environmental requirements

The laws that are meant to be protecting our coastal environments are failing. While the recently announced NSW parliamentary inquiry into historical development consents is a welcome step forward, developers will in the meantime be further incentivised to take advantage of these loopholes while they still can, to rake in more profit from building on sensitive coastal habitat.

With so many of these precious coastal ecosystems already lost, we cannot afford another wave of destruction from these ‘Zombie DAs’. Sign our petition to call for a moratorium on coastal ‘Zombie’ developments.

We call on the NSW government to:

1. Declare a moratorium on coastal developments approved before 2016, for the duration of the NSW parliamentary inquiry into Historical development consents
in NSW, in areas containing and adjacent to:

  • Listed Endangered and Threatened Ecological Communities, including saltmarsh and other threatened coastal wetland habitats
  • Habitat of species listed as critically endangered, including the swift parrot
  • Habitat of species listed as endangered, including the koala and greater glider
  • Habitat of species listed as vulnerable, including the glossy black cockatoo, powerful owl and wallum froglet

2. Immediately review the impact of projected sea level rise on coastal developments approved before 2016.
